Ever had a “flip” cocktail?

Usually made with a whole egg, sugar and spirit, these dairy free cocktails are all the creaminess with none of the lactose. I guess you can call this your post gym protein muscle building cocktail?

Initially served hot because it was stirred with a hot metal iron called a flip-dog (get it), this eventually became a sailors drink and has evolved, and evolved again over time, as these things do.

It’s so boozy it might make you swear like a sailor!

2 oz dark rum (higher proof the better)
1/2 oz Calvados
1 whole egg
1/2 oz spiced Demerara syrup
Nutmeg to garnish

One Pot Easy Potato Leak Soup

I used to make this satisfying soup EVERY winter but forgot about it for years. Never fear, I resurrected her last night and thought you’d be hip for some soup too!

In a La Creuset (or other heavy enamel pot) sauté in 2T of bubbly melted butter with 2 medium diced large leeks (white parts only) and 3 small garlic cloves roughly chopped. Sauté until soft and wilted. Add 1 quart of chicken stock and 3 peeled and small diced russet potatoes. Add a bay leaf and a few thyme sprigs and cook until potatoes are soft. Remove thyme sprigs and bay leaf, then, using an immersion blender (or a regular blender if that’s what you’re working with) blend until smooth. Add 3T of butter, salt and white pepper to taste. Blend a final time until smooth and shiny (because, butter) and top with your favorite toppings - green onion, bacon, sour cream, cheese etc..

Serves 4 as a main or 6 for an appetizer.

**you could easily sub out butter for olive oil to sauté and leave out the finishing butter for a dairy free or lower fat version. But really, what fun is that?

It’s simply no holiday season without my favorite confectionery oddity - The Turkey Joint!

Hailing from my mother’s hometown of Rome, NY, Nora’s Candy Shop has been transforming chocolate and nuts into iridescent bone-shaped treats for decades.

But what the hell is it? Is it chocolate or is it candy? Is it sweet or is it actually meat? Although now available in a variety of nut combinations, the 1919 Original Turkey Joint is made with chocolate and Brazil nuts and then coated in a silver candy shell. I guess this makes it both a chocolate and a candy!

Such a quirky fun gift made by a small independent business. They just remind me of the holidays! Merry Christmas 🎄
